Montreal

I am staying at a pretty swank hotel in Old Montreal. It's a good thing I'm not paying to stay here 'cause I could never afford this place.

I got in last night, and set out to find food at 9:30. It wasn't easy but I found a pretty cool place up the road and had some sort of Spanish cod dish.

When I woke up this morning I set out to find Autodesk/Discreet. I apparently misunderstood the conciege that pointed where I should walk and about 15 blocks later I was very very late for school.

After trudging up a hill I waved down a taxi. I thought it was stupid because I figured I had to be a block or two away.

7 minutes later down the freeway he dropped me off and again, I was pointed in the wrong direction.

After walking around aimlessly wondering why it's so hard to find a building when I know the address I give up and call my mentor back at the office. He gets me on the right path again. 11 Duke is not across the street from 10 Duke. It's like 4 blocks away in the direction I did NOT go.

So I find it. It's a huge freaking warehouse that looks like shit. But once you open that door it is technology central. I was at least a half hour late but it didn't matter. They were covering how to log into the computer and use the UNIX shell. I've done that about 5000 times at work.

The day dragged on. It wasn't until 4pm or so when I finally learned something I didn't know, a shortcut key command...

I can tell the instructor knows his shit, so by the end of the week we should be banging. There are 3 other guys in my class, 1 works for Discreet as a support tech and is taking the class to better familiarize himself with the software. The other 2 guys are established editors that are at least 40 years old.

I am the only American but I actually know a couple of the guys at the company so at least when we get a break I can wander around and say hi to people I normally talk to on the phone from Detroit when something is broken.

I am invited to a swank Christmas party, no one else in class got invited... I can only guess that it's because of where I work (we have to be one of their top 10 clients) It's nice to be the client for once...

So it's some sort of fancy dinner and then as they clear the tables away its a comedy show and then it turns into a dance floor or something. It sounds weird and French, but I think I may like it.

Tonight I wandered around looking for food at 6pm. I passed 2 closed malls. I finally found a place to eat at 7pm, a sushi bar that opened TODAY. It was freaking awesome sushi, I am going back on Wednesday for sure, I may even try something slimy, normally I stick to the "safe" sushi... spicy california rolls, tuna rolls and philly rolls.

I said 'tuna roll' and they were dumbfounded. I should have known better than to say 'philly roll' but I tried anyways, and once I started describing it she want ahhh, and handed me a menu in French.

I know very little French...

Bonjour! (Hello!)
Menage E Trois? (Can I fuck you and your friend?)
S'il Vous PlaƮt (Please?)
Merci (Thank You)

DJ at Discreet tells me I need to learn more to say in between the hello and the asking for sex, but what does he know, he just lives here.
